Assam: In a significant session, the Assam Cabinet has unveiled pivotal decisions to prioritize the welfare of indigenous minorities, enhance educational opportunities, and ensure ethical treatment of animals. The state will conduct a comprehensive socio-economic assessment of Assam’s indigenous minorities, particularly focusing on Assamese Muslims, through the renamed Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Areas.
To foster a reading culture among students, the government plans to establish libraries and digital infrastructure under the ‘Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-24.’ This initiative aims to construct new libraries, procure books, furniture, and computers with internet connectivity in various villages and municipal wards, benefiting children and adolescents.
Recognizing the cultural significance of traditional bullfights, the cabinet is implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to safeguard the well-being of animals involved. Detailed procedures have been issued for events during Magh Bihu, emphasizing the prevention of deliberate torture or cruelty to animals during the annual Moh-juj festival, a cherished part of Assamese cultural tradition.
These decisions reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive development, education, and the ethical treatment of animals, marking a positive stride toward the betterment of Assam’s communities.
