SC rejects demand to declare Sanskrit as national language

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking to declare Sanskrit as the national language. A bench headed by Justice MR Shah said that it is the job of Parliament, not the court, to take such a decision. The court also said that the purpose of the petition appears to be publicity.

In the petition filed by retired bureaucrat DG Vanzara, there was a demand to promote the language by declaring Sanskrit as the national language. During the hearing, the court asked the petitioner that in how many cities of the country Sanskrit language is spoken. Vanzara then said that he wanted a discussion on the matter from the Centre. Then the court asked Vanzara whether he speaks Sanskrit or could he speak a line in Sanskrit or could he translate his petition prayer into Sanskrit.
