New Delhi: The Delhi High Court will hear the bail plea of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused of Delhi violence today (Monday). A bench headed by Justice Siddharth Mridul will hear the matter.

Earlier on August 4, during the hearing, Delhi Police had said that the Shaheen Bagh protest was not of Nani and Dadi as was publicized. Amit Prasad, appearing for Delhi Police, had said that the Shaheen Bagh agitation was organised by the resources mobilised in a well-planned manner by Sharjeel Imam. Prasad had said that the number of supporters at the protest site was very small. Artists and musicians were brought in from outside so that the locals could continue to participate in the performances.

On August 2, Amit Prasad said that the first violence took place on December 13, 2019. This violence happened due to the distribution of pamphlets on behalf of Sharjeel Imam. Amit Prasad referred to the speech given by Sharjeel Imam at Jamia on December 13th. He said that in the speech of Sharjeel Imam it was clearly stated that his aim was to create a traffic jam and that, through this jam, the supply of essential commodities in Delhi was to be disrupted. A riot broke out soon after Sharjeel’s speech. After that, the venue of the demonstration was changed to Shaheen Bagh. Let us inform you that Amit Prasad has been presenting the arguments since August 1.

On July 28, advocate Tridip Paes, appearing for Umar Khalid, completed the arguments in this case. It was said on behalf of Umar Khalid that the incidents which have been mentioned to show the conspiracy in the charge sheet filed against him have no relation with each other. Advocate Tridip Paes, appearing for Umar Khalid, had said that five WhatsApp groups have been discussed in the chargesheet, of which Umar Khalid was a member of only two groups. And he also used to send messages to the same group. He had said that none of the eyewitnesses said that Umar Khalid was a participant in the violence during the protests organised against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The police made a case before the arrest of Umar Khalid. It is noteworthy that the High Court is hearing the bail plea filed by Umar Khalid on April 22.

On March 24, the Karkardooma Court rejected the bail application of Umar Khalid. Delhi Police had opposed the bail plea of other accused, including Umar Khalid, accused of Delhi violence, saying that there was terror funding in this case. Amit Prasad said that Tahir Hussain, the accused in this case, was given the task of converting black money into white. Amit Prasad had said that 53 people died during the violence in North-East Delhi. 755 FIRs have been registered in this case. Umar Khalid was arrested by the Special Cell after questioning on September 13, 2020. On September 17, 2020, the court took cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the Special Cell of Delhi Police.
