New Delhi: The rapid development of mobile and internet technology has revolutionized communication, but it has also increased serious risks such as cyber security threats, espionage, and data leaks. The growing use of mobile phones in government offices has raised concerns over national security. Unauthorized use of mobile devices in government offices increases the risk of espionage, sensitive data leaks, and cyberattacks. Recently, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested a man accused of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. The accused, who fell into a honey trap, was sending sensitive military information to his handlers in Pakistan.
Experts point out that earlier, government offices primarily relied on wired telephones, which significantly reduced the risk of data leaks and espionage. However, with the advent of smartphones and wireless technology, the chances of sensitive information being compromised have increased manifold. Advanced spyware and remote access tools can turn any smartphone into a surveillance device. Even unknowingly carrying a mobile phone into a government meeting poses a significant risk. Spyware technology can remotely activate microphones to record confidential discussions, potentially impacting national defense, diplomatic negotiations, and public security.
Although the government has imposed restrictions on mobile phone usage in certain high-security areas, experts suggest that a comprehensive policy is needed to prevent any leakage of sensitive information. Several countries have already enforced strict bans on mobile phone usage in government offices to enhance security. In India, there is a growing demand for stricter regulations on mobile device usage in high-security zones.
Security experts have proposed multiple measures to safeguard government meetings. These include using only authorized and encrypted communication channels, deploying signal jamming and soundproof walls in high-security areas, conducting regular scans for hidden surveillance devices and malicious software, and implementing stringent guidelines on the use of mobile phones and electronic devices for government employees.
According to experts, as technology advances, it is crucial to take concrete steps to ensure the security of government offices. Preventing incidents of cyber espionage and data leaks requires strict regulations, robust security measures, and awareness among employees about digital security. To protect national interests and safeguard sensitive information, the government must strengthen its security policies while keeping pace with modern technology.
