New Delhi: The Indian government has expressed serious concerns over the treatment of its citizens facing deportation from the United States. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed on Friday that 487 individuals presumed to be Indian have received “final removal orders” from U.S. authorities.
Earlier this week, 104 Indian migrants were deported via a U.S. military aircraft, reportedly in shackles throughout their journey, before being freed upon landing in Amritsar. India has formally raised this issue with the U.S., emphasizing the need for humane treatment of deportees.
“This recent deportation was different from previous ones as it was classified as a national security operation,” Misri said. “We have flagged concerns regarding mistreatment and will continue to engage with the U.S. on this matter.”
While deportation flights have occurred for years, this particular case has drawn attention due to the use of military aircraft and the reported conditions onboard. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that deportations have followed a standard procedure since 2012, but India is now ensuring due diligence in each case.
With nearly 500 individuals set for removal, the Indian government is working closely with U.S. authorities to verify citizenship and facilitate safe repatriation.
