Prime Minister Narendra Modi may soon visit the United States for a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, as both leaders recently discussed plans for such an engagement. The announcement comes after a phone conversation between Modi and Trump, during which the two leaders emphasized strengthening ties across trade, defense, and regional security.
In an official statement, the White House confirmed, “The leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House.” The Indian government echoed the sentiment, stating, “The leaders agreed to remain in touch and meet soon at an early mutually convenient date.”
This potential visit will mark Modi’s first bilateral meeting with Trump since the latter’s return to office. Modi’s last formal meeting with a US President was with Joe Biden in September 2024, during the Quad Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.
Key Issues on the Agenda
Bilateral Trade Relations:
President Trump reiterated his commitment to fair trade between the two nations, highlighting concerns over India’s tariffs on US-made goods. In his earlier term (2017–2021), Trump had expressed displeasure over trade imbalances, and he has recently proposed potential tariff measures on allies, including Canada. The two leaders are expected to discuss strategies to enhance bilateral trade ties while addressing existing disputes.
Defense Cooperation:
Strengthening defense ties remains a top priority for both nations. The White House emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made defense equipment. However, delays in the delivery of General Electric’s F404 jet engines, critical for India’s Tejas Mark 1A jets, have posed challenges. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, responsible for producing the jets, has faced setbacks due to the delay.
Regional and Strategic Partnerships
The leaders also discussed deepening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, Europe, and the Middle East. Both emphasized advancing the US-India strategic partnership, particularly through the Quad framework, which includes the US, India, Japan, and Australia. India is set to host the Quad Leaders’ Summit later this year for the first time.
The Quad partnership is particularly significant amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. Last week, the Quad foreign ministers met in Washington, D.C., reaffirming their opposition to coercive actions and emphasizing the importance of international law and stability in the maritime domain.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The phone call between Modi and Trump was described as “productive,” with both leaders reiterating their commitment to expanding bilateral relations. “They discussed a range of regional issues, including security and economic opportunities,” the White House statement said.
As India and the US continue to deepen their ties, PM Modi’s upcoming visit is poised to address key challenges, forge stronger partnerships, and advance shared goals across trade, defense, and regional security.
